Cookbook Typing Standards

Cookbook Typing Standards

• Be consistent.

• Order of ingredients should match instruction sequence.

• Correct: 2 med. carrots, finely chopped
1 c. finely-chopped carrots, cooked
Any description that comes before the ingredient is what you’re supposed to do before you measure out the ingredient. Anything that you do after you have measured out the ingredient would come afterward and is separated by a comma. So using the example above: I would want to finely-chopped the carrots, measure out what I need and then I would cook them.

• Use plural form for onions. Example: 1 c. chopped onions, except when ingredients say: 1 onion, chopped

• Always combine the amounts of an ingredient:
Example: 2 (14 oz.) cans sweetened condensed milk should be changed to 28 oz. sweetened condensed milk.

• Also if it says: 1 (14 oz.) can chicken broth, leave out the can and just use 14 oz. chicken broth.

• 2 Tbsp. cornstarch, heaping is correct as is 2 c. sugar (or less) and 2 c. nuts (optional)

• Always add a space between numbers and fractions when typing in the database.

• Jelly beans is generally 2 words, but when a customer specifies the Starburst brand, copy their 1-word brand style: Starburst Jellybeans.

• Use no inch marks if you have 2 measurements for a pan. (Example: 9x13 or 10x15)

• Use inch marks when you have only 1 measurement for a pan. (Example: 9" pan or 8" square pan)

• When a recipe has all the ingredients and amounts in the instructions, then set it up like other recipes with the amounts entered into the ingredients panel.

• Correct: Bake uncovered at 350° for 30 minutes.
Not Correct: Bake for 30 minutes, uncovered, at 350°.

• Be consistent about adding or not adding a colon (:) in the Part Heading. Example: Topping:

• If a description would be for 6 small or 3 large apples: Type the 6 in the first space, select sm. from the dropdown and then just type the rest of it in the 3rd space (or 3 lg. apples). Make sure you abbreviate where needed.

• Everything should be spelled out in the instructions. No abbreviations.

• Correct: (2) 9x13 pans. NOT: 2-9x13 pans.

• CHECK SPELLING AS YOU GO!

• You are able to force singular or plural by right clicking on the drop down field and clicking on Carlisle Cookbooks.
